Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
