Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Plans: The Background of Craps

[ English ]

Be cunning, play clever, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
