Pickup Craps – Tricks and Techniques: The Background of Craps

[ English ]

Be clever, play brilliant, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
