Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
