Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
