Be smart, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
