Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
