Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
