Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
