Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
