Be clever, play smart, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
