Master Craps – Hints and Plans: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
