Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
