Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
