Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
