Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
