Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
