Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
