Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
