Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
