Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
