Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
