Pickup Craps – Tips and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
