Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
