Pickup Craps – Tips and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
