Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
