Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
