Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
