Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
