Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
