Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
