Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
