Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
