Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
