Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
