Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
