Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
