Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
