Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
