Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
