Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
