Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
