Become Versed in Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
