Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
