Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be clever, play cunning, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
