Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
